Změlíková, Alžběta ; Aslan, Katarína (advisor) ; Průchová Hrůzová, Andrea (referee)
The Bachelor's thesis on the topic of Content Analysis of the presentation of Black Lives Matter movement in Czech media aims to construct an image of the Black Lives Matter movement based on two selected Czech media using qualitative content analysis. The chosen media are the on-line versions of the outlets Respekt and Echo, which were selected based on their political attitude and the fact that they are not solely news media, but authors add their own opinion and view. The studied sample consists of 38 articles published in the chosen media during 2020 and 2021 and is analysed based on grounded theory and a brief discourse analysis based on Allan Bell. The paper finds that the image of the movement differs between the two media outlets. Respekt's attitude toward the movement is consistent, the authors present it as a non- hierarchical protest movement and use neutral rhetoric for further description. Based on broader context (such as the overall tone of the articles or the choice of people that were interviewed on the topic), it is certain that Respekt supports the movement. In the case of Echo24.cz, an ambiguity in the overall attitude towards the movement can be seen which does not help create a clear image of BLM. Although, in most articles, the server speaks about the movement in rather...
Gender Role Represented in Official Media: Communist Legacies and the Gap between Rhetoric and Reality
He, Jiarong ; Kolenovská, Daniela (advisor) ; Svoboda, Karel (referee) ; Kubal, Agnieszka Maria (referee)
The question addressed in this paper is how the mainstream media reproduced and participated in reshaping gender discourse before and after the transformation in Russia and the Peoples Republic of China, selecting People's Daily and Rabotnitsa from 1980 to 2000 as research objects and conducting both quantitative and qualitative analysis. In general, both countries have gone through the centralised state market economy reforms and suffered the impact of free market consumerism and commercialization with these. As a result, women's aesthetic is more diversified, but it also strengthens the sexual gaze of women's bodies. There are more new occupations, but women also face great challenges when a depression or labour surplus occurs. Meanwhile, the legacies inherited by the two countries also differed to some extent. Russia experienced a more violent and comprehensive onslaught of ideas, where consumerism and commercialization were more directly reflected in the mass media, and the social gender order took on a state of tug-of-war between the traditional, communist and emerging identities, while China's reform has eroded the legacies in a more insidious and slow manner. Semiotics management remains in the hands of the Party, but economic and social liberalization are not only influencing people's...
Gender Equality, Biathlon and Media: An Analysis of Media Production
Gerth, Lisa ; Numerato, Dino (advisor) ; Vochocová, Lenka (referee)
Women are significantly underrepresented in sports. This is primarily because for many centuries it was forbidden for women to participate in sports. Today, women are allowed to take part in numerous sports and in major events such as the Olympic Games. Nevertheless, a male hegemony prevails in sports, which is expressed especially in media production. Biathlon represents one of the sport disciplines in which women and men operate on an equal footing. The goal of this paper is to analyze the media production processes in biathlon, concerning the gender issues. The research was conducted with qualitative interviews with sports journalists and athletes and analyzed with grounded theory. Data analysis shows that journalists do not address the issue of gender equality in biathlon coverage. They primarily report on the sporting success of the athletes, regardless of gender. This also means that hardly any women-specific topics are addressed. The interviewed journalists are gender-blind in their work. There is rather a marginalized equality of men and women. Especially female athletes and female journalists point out that the sport of biathlon and the media production about it can further improve in terms of gender equality.
Mass media portrayal of Czech courts
Forejtová, Natálie ; Homolová, Pavla (advisor) ; Sedláčková, Markéta (referee)
This thesis focuses on the mass media portrayal of Czech courts in the context of the possible influence on the court's legitimacy and confidence. The research of portrayal is based on the analysis of Fagan's dimensions of legitimacy (effectiveness, distributive justice and procedural justice), court rulings and the overall view. The representation of sources of legitimacy rather corresponds to materialistic society - the most represented dimension in 2014 was the effectiveness, on the other hand, distributive justice was represented the least. Normative factors, namely procedural fairness, however, were not covered much. The portrayal in 2014 was, in terms of judicial rulings and the overall view, rather neutral but the sources of legitimacy were mostly negative. Differences were mainly found among mass media portrayal of the lower courts and higher courts and the differences correspond to different confidence in these institutions. I also studied the development since 1997, but besides the increasing interest of mass media in the courts, I have not found any other significant differences which could cause the rise of confidence in the courts. Mass media can also cause the difference in confidence in the courts of the left-wing and right-wing oriented people, because the journal Pravo has a slight...
